What to do in Penang?
Penang - known as the Pearl of Orient situated on the north of Peninsular Malaysia .
Main city- Georgetown ( a UNESCO Heritage site)
Penang is well known for its beautiful island, beaches, heritage buildings, the kongsi's ( clan house ) temples of various cultures and best of all is the varieties of delicious food.
A very strategic location for travelling up north to Thailand, to the west side to Medan, Indonesia.
Majority community of the Penangites speaks Hokkien with some blend of Malay words.
Basically the Peranankan community was here as well as the Eurasians.
Today the community is almost extinct as most of them and their decendents had migrated to other parts of the world such as United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Canada and even United States.
In Penang you can go for a Heritage walk around Georgetown - looking around on the British colonial heritage and the earlier communities of migrants.
Places that may visit includes; The Goddess of Mercy Temple at Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (formerly known as Pitt Street) , The Kapitan Keling Mosque, the Sri Mahamariamman Temple, The Carpenters Guild, as well as the bustling commercial centre of Penang at Beach street,, -here you may see the beautiful commercial buildings such as the India House, the OCBC Building, the Standard Chartered Bank building and many others.
A visit to the first British fort in Penang ( formerly known as Prince of Wales island) which is Fort Conwallis .
The main attractuion here is the Sri Rambai Cannon - originally a Dutch Cannon ( you may see the insciption on the cannon in Dutch)
Also some cathedrals and of course the Blue Mansion and the Peranakan mansion.
